Kirk, I re-did this "Gefapip" for a buddy here on the forum, it came out pretty nice. I didn't sand off the original finish because I really liked the color. There was just far too many abusive knicks and scratches on the bottom, but I think it came out ace. Not something I'd do to a collectible or rare pipe, but it's fun on the cheapies.

Kyle I like your rustication style. Any chance you could do a step by step like Kirk did with pic's & tools/techniques on your next one?
I have a basket pipe i'd like to mess with.

I would have used blood to stain the finished pipe. Seriously, look around for a thing called a 'cut glove' which will save some unintentional wounds..
I did a search for some protective gloves some time ago but couldn't actually find any that stated they would protect from stabbing, I found many to protect from cutting but the forces involved are quite different from a knife slipping to a chisel tabbing into the flesh. I emailed a couple of sites back then, one answered and said that 'all' of the cut safety gloves protected you from being cut, I just gave up as my point about chisels was entirely lost on the chap.
True not puncture resistant. I would wrap my forefinger with duct tape which would help if I was unlucky. On small stuff (like a pipe) I would have a piece of 2 X 4 with a several smaller pieces screwed to it to act as a fence to hold the piece from moving so I could keep my cherished finger in back of the cutting edge of the chisel. I would imagine a "V" shape would give more stability to something like a bowl. Perhaps a short piece of dowel to put the bowl over while working on? Hopefully this is clearer than mud (g)..john

I hate those anti-cut "kitchen gloves" with a passion. One kitchen I did some time in for a few years required such things (loosely) and though I gave 'em a try, I ended up mangling the food, cutting slowly and doing a great job dulling the knife from the folds getting caught near the blade. I ended up saying "Write me up for not producing fast enough or write me up for not wearing the glove." They backed off. There's an amount of dexterity and precision that cumbersome inventions like that naturally defeat. It's funny how self-preservation and proper technique solve injury more than all the safety crap available...

...if I have the time and gumption, I may put a how-to on the rustication, but... we'll see.
