I usually take a pinch drop it in the bowl and tap the bowl sides to let it settle at the botton, then another pinch and do the same only I then press down with my finger and finally a third pinch that rises slightly above the bowl rim and press down firmly till it's all level with the rim then it's match time!! If the 'baccy is not as dry as i like I'll let that bowl sit for some tme before re-pressing it down and putting a match to! It's the method I use probably 95 % of the time with 98% of the 'baccy I smoke! Been doing it this way now for almost 40+ years, don't know what the name of it is, only that it's worked for me all these years!!
I didn't know anyone one else did the tap the side of the bowl method. It works pretty good for me. Just have to a little careful with a more damp baccy.

All pipe tobacco leaves first undergo a process called “casing” where moisture is added along with subtle amounts of sweeteners such as sugar, rum, cocoa and or licorice.
I think a lot of people forget this and think only aromatics are cased.

Edit: and people use casing and topping interchangeably, which are helpfully differentiated here.

I think Tambolaka might be exclusive of this treatment...or use something different...like tree frog extract, or water buffalo tallow, or whatever.

Important to remember - use two thumbs, and work around in a circle with minimal down pressure.
