We've all got one. You know the one; the pipe you don't display on the rack or smoke when others are watching. Maybe it's a battered old veteran or a putty queen. Perhaps the "unique" carving looks like an upside down dog pile. Show us your worst. Let us know how you came to own such a monster, and why you haven't gotten rid of it yet.
Here's mine. It's an odd, cloth-covered GBD of unknown vintage.
I got it as part of a 2-pipe ebay lot with a nice old Longchamp. I wanted the Longchamp and made what I considered a low ball offer, hoping I might be able to negotiate for just the one pipe. To my surprise, the seller excepted right away, so I feel a bit like I got the GBD for free.
It's actually denim, but worn as it is, you could hardly tell. It's spotted and stained and worn down to a hard, oily sheen, like my dirtiest shop coat. Why anyone would wrap a pipe in absorbent, easily soiled fabric is beyond my reasoning.
I must admit, though, it's a rugged looking little beast. It smokes as well as any of my 3 GBDs. It's nice to have a good-smoking pipe that I don't need to worry about dirtying up, and as such, it goes well with said shop coat. Then again, maybe I just keep it around to make my Jolly Boy feel pretty.
