Suggestions?

Hello - new to the forum with a few questions. I have reviewed the stickys, but still am searching for something new to try.

A little background; I have traditionally smoked Aro's for the room note, but am looking to expand my horizons. Favorite to this point has been the Gatlinburlier's Pistachio Peak - it really hit all notes for me (I need to get more!). That being said, I recently hit up Smokingpipes for an order and got the following to try...just so you know where I am going with this:

PS Luxury Bullseye Flake, Kendel Flake, Rum and Sweet Whiskey Twist

To this point I have been able to partake of the Bullseye Flake and really enjoy it. However, it is missing a bit of depth for me, or that is the best way I can explain it. I am looking for something along the same lines, but a little nuttier and sweeter. I like the nuances of this tobacco; I just wish there was more of it/to it.

Maybe I need to try this out of an unsmoked/cleaned pipe? Most of my 'collection' is in storage due to an impending move, so I currently only have a recently purchased Savinelli estate that I have yet to give the full cleaning routine....

Any thoughts/suggestions would be very welcome.

Well the Rum and Sweet Whiskey Twists will expand your horizons. If you don't have experience with those, smoke them in a small bowl, nice and slow and when you start to feel no pain, stop.

Well, the PS Luxury Bullseye Flake is in no way an aromatic, actually a coin cut virginia blend.  FWIW, while a good value for the price,I feel it's much better aged 2-3 years.

Since you want something "sweeter and nuttier," try some Trout Stream.  Both Rich at 4 Noggins and Russ at P&C sell it (10% off w/BoB discount @ 4 Noggins) and it's sold in bulk.

Thank you for your thoughts. I picked up a smaller bowled pipe last night for the twists. As to the Trout Stream, I will certainly keep that in mind when I next order, though I am pretty well stocked with aromatics for the time being.

I'm looking for something with a good room note that has a bit more flavor 'complexity' than your standard aro. I really enjoyed the bullseye flake (I'll be partaking again on my commute home) but I did not quite like the separation of flavor if you will. I folded the coins, which most likely contributed to this. I plan on fully rubbing it out this afternoon to see how the smoke will change.

I also plan on attempting a few English blends to feel them out. I am not a huge fan of Latakia, but I can appreciate it in moderation. Any recommendations for an English/American English blend that is lighter on Latakia, as well as recommendations for a bullseye that may be a tad heavier on the Cavendish? I'm searching and reading reviews, but it's nice to receive personal experience a bit more first hand.

I think Samuel Gawith Chocolate Flake fits the bill perfectly. It is a sweet aromatic chocolate flake with a pinch of latakia. Lane's HGL is another aromatic with a pinch of Latakia.

A sweet Virginia flake I would suggest would be Orlik Golden Slices, quite sweet and "citrusy"

Now, perhaps if you give me a little more info I can help you with more suggestions. What do you mean by English? Are you using the "common" definition? What I mean by common is a non-aro blend with latakia. Depending on how you define English we might be able to suggest more.

Definitely try the chocolate flake though.

Thank you for those suggestions - I am interested in trying the Orlik Golden Slices; I will have a look at that shortly. I will file the SG Chocolate aside for the next aro order...which may be a while given my existing stock. Same for the Trout Stream suggested earlier.

As to more info - what I am looking for is a non-aro that has a good room note, a bit of sweetness and is medium to full bodied. As stated above, I enjoyed the PS Luxury Bullseye flake but would like something a tad sweeter (naturally or topped) and perhaps nuttier (burly?).

By English, I did mean in the traditional sense. I do not mind Latakia/Orientals but not heavily so...I have had in previous blends and it can become overwhelming at times.

There are so many tobacco's to go through that trial and error can become quite expensive. I very much appreciate the help and advice to try and narrow down what I am looking for. I hope that once I am able to more actively delve into the non-aro realm, I will better convey what it is that I am seeking.

I have 2 blends as a suggestion for you.

1) Killingtons @ 4noggins. This is an aro, but has an amazing room note and lots of intricate flavors. It has a creamy taste to it as well. Not obnoxiously sweet and sticky either. No fruity flavors that I can tell.

2) Three Nuns -- it comes in a 1.75oz tin, but I find it a very enjoyable non-aro smoke. It comes in coins in the tin. I find it is a pleasant smoke with no tongue bite. It has a bit of a peppery bite, but is well balanced. Also available at 4noggins.com

Anniversary Kake by H&H is sweet and fruity, but with no Cavendish. I also like Fox's Provost Mixture (VA-Cav), though I've only smoked it with a considerable amount of age on it.

Well TBH, Trout Stream, IMO, though fragrant, isn't actually an aromatic.  When you do place an order, I still suggest you try an ounce or two and see what I am talking about.

If you're looking for a naturally sweet virginia, I suggest Brigham's Klondike Gold -- it's a flake and quite popular right now -- though it's out of stock at many vendors and thus may be hard to find ATM (I still have 5 tins of this one on BO).  A couple other good, naturally sweet virginias are Mac Baren's Capstan Gold and Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake.

If you're stepping in to try English blends, the "crossover" blends from the McClelland Craftsbury Series: Frog Morton line are very good choices.  My favorites are the Froggie Cellar, the Original Frog Morton and the On the Town.  Rich @ 4 Noggins also blends an excellent proprietary blend he makes for a Spanish pipe group called El Rincon de la Pipa No. 1 which is a mild but flavorful blend sold in bulk.

I was looking at the Frog Morton's the other day. Looks like I will be getting a tin of each to try. I've read a lot of reviews regarding them, and just never could convince myself to pull the trigger....thanks for the suggestions.

Also...if you want to try out some of the blends you'll be liking in about ten years, go to 4N's and look up the bulk John Patton blends. To my taste NO ONE surpasses him in terms of jaw dropping goodness. Start with Stormfront!

Then...maybe Park Lane's Red Paramour and Connoisseurs Flake.

Then...well, that's enough for starters.

THIS 100% ! Seems all the newbies just by-pass this thread and have some need to re-ask the same question as is answered in this thread. We all spent some time filling that out back when it was started as I recall and there are GREAT suggestions in it !!  :twisted: :twisted:
