I am new here, so sorry if this has been posted/asked here before. I seen these pipes http://www.dealextreme.com/p/polished-wooden-cigarette-pipe-8240 on this site, was wondering if anyone has purchased, or know if these are any good. There are others on the site also.

First, that ain't briar. Maybe maple?

I'd steer clear of that site. If you're looking to get a rotation going, pick up some MM cobs from a local tobacconist and you'll be set to start. If you really want some wood, shoot for a briar basket pipe. Ebay is also a great place to snag some good deals.

That looks an awful lot like some pipes I saw in China a few years back. POS is too good of a term for their quality, and made of some odd soft wood. Be careful. I'd advise sticking to brands we know.

Not Spam, I promise you that, just a guy looking for a deal on a new pipe. I figured it was to good to be true. any suggestions, on were to find a good pipe on a budget? I am sorry if you felt it was a SPAM post, I am "newbie" to the hobby, I only have a cheap corn-cob pipe, that I purchased to try it out. Turns out, I enjoy a few puffs in the evening, and would like to purchase something a little better. I guess I should have posted a little about me in the welcome section first, I plan on doing this soon. Please don't hold my post against me, I was just looking for some advice.

No problem Next time just go ahead and ask what's on your mind! There is NO wrong question and we all started out at some time It might help if you would state EXACTLY the price range you are able and want to spend. One mans low price can be waaaay different than anothers so some numbers would help in giving you some sort of definative answer

Get a decent Missouri Meerscham, a Country Gentleman, Diplomat, General, etc. and forget about it. What's the point of going elsewhere if you're expense restricted or whatever. If you find you like pipe smoking, save your pennies for a decent briar if for some reason you want to. Speaking personally, I could live with just cobs--and I have Dunhills, Castellos, and other crap sitting on my rack, most idle. My cobs are not. Just sayin'.

At the $40/$50 range you can find some decent looking and smoking Savanelli models. Here's an example of one from one of the good internet retailers and there are others out there. Take some time and you can find others.

BTW, Savanelli are one of the older production made GOOD pipe manufactureres out there and have a wide range of price-points for their pipes. I've smoked their pipes for over 30 years and find 'em a good value.

I run from any tag line that includes the word 'cigarette'. That word alone tells me that the seller is not a true tobacconist.

As someone who has to always look for budget pipes, I'd recommend you either purchase a few basket pipes, or start wit the lower end pipes which are around $60. I'm not sure where you live, but it you have a TinderBox, their Carolina Briar products are quite nice. I also purchased a beautiful (until someone stepped on it) La Rocca, which smoked amazing. I have dedicated both of these pipes to English Blends. You should also look at Etsy.com for some good deals. As a last thought, Savinelli makes decent and budget friendly pipes that I personally like quite a bit.

The brands I'd recommend you look at initially, are: (especially if you're online shopping)
-Savinelli (major brand)
-Peterson (major brand)
-Stanwell (major brand)
-LaRocca
-Carolina Briar
