I've been listening to A LOT of jazz lately. I'm a fan of free jazz, from Peter Brotzmann to Albert Ayler, but modal jazz has been out of my pocket of interest. I know a ton about Miles Davis from '69-'75, but knew nothing outside of that period. Until lately. It started with hearing the melody to Brubeck's "Take Five" on a TV show (not sure which one). I couldn't get it out of my head, so I listened to it a dozen times on youtube. Found myself wanting more and to learn more. Watched the BBC documentary on 1959 The Year That Changed Jazz (or something close to that title).
Lots of Mingus, MDavis, Art Blakey, Brubeck, OColeman, Paul Desmond, Yusef Lateef, and Pharoah Sanders. Limiting myself to '59ish to '66ish. I still do NOT care for bebop.
