Helloooo,
So im sitting here with my first real pipe (after my first cob ofc), a Peterson, Rock of Cashel 999, sipping on some Early Morning pipe.... and breathing in some coffee.

And i have been thinki9ng about what to get from my second pipe. for weeks i have been uhmm'ing and arr'ing over it, and all i know is, i would like a straight billard, smooth, pipe.

Sorry i do not know how to link in pic's/links, but im sure most of you may know these.

Peterson Dublin : 06
Peterson Fermoy : 87
Peterson System Smooth : 31

(Although these are no smooth, i love them! Tortuga being my fav!)

Savinelli Oscar Tiger : 106
Savinelli Tortuga Sandblast : 207 or 106

i dont know if im shooting over my head with any of these, for my second pipe! but if any one has any advise with these, or tips on what to try next, im all ears! :)

or a Perterson D6, gray smooooooth churchwarden, too soon for a church warden.. maybe! :)

anyhooo,
Have a lovly day every1, and thanks!

Ozzy

If you like the Peterson maybe get another? Some guys' racks only hold Petersons. Savinelli, Brebbia and Stanwell all make great pipes in this price range, all produce good smokers. Brebbia stand out a bit in that only the bowl shaping is done by machine, the rest hand-made, or so I've read.

Good looking choices there. What size pipe are you looking at getting? If you're wanting something on the smaller, lighter side you could look at the Stanwell Featherweight 107. If you're looking for something on the larger side I'd look at Savinelli billiards with the KS and EX markings added to their number, EX being the largest.

i know you said you were looking for a billiard, but I have a Savinelli Poker (310KS) that was reasonably priced and smokes great. I got it because it was a "sitter," and I wanted something by my easy chair I could put down easily and pick up later. I am more likely to be interrupted there. It has been a great pipe, and I like the slightly larger bowl.

There are two ways to buy pipes. Either buy the pipe, and choose the tobacco later, or purchase the pipe with a certain tobacco in mind.

If I were just starting out, I would choose one pipe for English blends, one for Orientals, one for Balkans, and another for Virginias.

However if you only like smoking one category of tobacco, you might choose your pipes differently based on those requirements. There are lot's of variables to consider, based on where your preferences are.

Savinelli and Stanwell make very nice pipes at a reasonable price. I have lots of them, and a couple of Brebbias, and all of them are super nice.

Ozzy,
Youv'e lined out a nice choice of pipes to choose from, all good examples of two fine makers of "standard" style pipes that will give you good value for your money. I have several from both makers you've noted and they ALL are great, enjoyable pipes to smoke. If you want to follow in the Peterson vein, I would recommend you pick up a
System" pipe to see just what made them so famous. JMHO :p

Well thank you all!!
by all the responces, i guess i cant go wrong with any of them.

tbh, a billard style is.. mhe... as long as its a stright and a bit more traditional i guess.
Hopfully it will be slightly lighter then my 999 rock, as i do like to chomp it alittle and keep it hanging  (i bought some little rubber bite which works very well!)

I am leaning towards the system pipe, but i still got a few days till pay day, so i got time to keep thinking! :)

I am a new pipe smoker, and although i bought alot of different 5g samples of tobacco (some where in the welcome waggon area you may find some, posted a pic)
i have forgotten most of them, but i did take advice and tried a few good english blends, and my fav so far was dunhill MM965 and EMP...

there was one, forgotten the name...which had the taste of a good english, rich and smoky, abit like MM965, but the tobacco smell was alot sweeter, with alot of coffe/chocholate and toffee notes... and the room aroma was very plesent! ... but at the heart of an old english blend and sweet after taste... if that makes sence?
(im still trying to learn all the different tobaccos, latakia, turkish.. etc, but not gr8 at them!)

so i will probly make this an english exculsive.

As i live in the UK, there sadly isnt a pipe shop or tobacconist near by, so have to look and buy online, but i do my reserch well i feel (got to do somthing at work i guess!)
and by the feeling of it, the pipe world is alot bigger in the US then the UK, unless im missing somthing.

But anyway, enough of me drippling on,
Thank all very much

any advice on straights and nice english blends.. (of maybe somthing different you think i may like to try!) all very welcome,

loving this pipe community! :)

A man with excellent taste there !

Pretty unusual taste too. Kids these days all want bent crazy looking pipes.

IMHO, if you stay within the trifecta of quality mid-grades (Savinelli, Stanwell, Peterson) you'll do fine.

For that matter, I would SERIOUSLY consider having Ocelot or Sasquatch (or T.A. Harris &/or others here) MAKE you one. It wouldn't come as cheap as one of the trifecta's lower end Fords & Chevvys, but it would be within the range of prices their best grade(s) fetch, and would be made to a noticeably higher standard.

Check their sites and see who makes what that you like and for around how much.

FWIW

how do people rate Butz Choquin pipes?

(alittle more affordable!)

Butz Choquin Cadre Noir - Shape No.1601   looks kind of classy! :)

Any outfit that makes pipes with a wide range of quality will turn out some of everything. It depends on the pipe.

I've had bad luck with most French made briars (I've had 6 and have gotten rid of 5) The main issue I've seen with them is that they tend to have tiny draft holes. That makes it difficult for all but the most experienced smokers to coax the most out of their tobacco out of them.

Of course YMMV, but the only French made briar I'll ever buy again is a Sebastian Beo. Chacom and BC do make nice looking pipes, though.

This is my new little beauty!! :)

thanks for all the advice. this is going to be my English pipe.
And since i am always talked out of buying EMP to buy somthing else, i had to finaly buy a tin! and what a lovly smoke it is too! :)

And i got a couple of black bites, and although this has a P-lip, the bite fits perfectly after it (although my look alittle strange)
Becasue i chomp down alittle, this helps!

Is this a Peterson system pipe? I understand how the system works in a bent design, and I have one which works very well. I have always wondered if they work well in a straight pipe or just create a mess if the stem gets tilted the wrong way.

Do you (or anyone else) have insight here?

well, as this is my 2nd pipe, i dont have a gr8 deal to go with (only to compare with my cob and RoC '999) but i can say its lovly!

From what i 'think' i know about the bent systems, yes sorry this is a peterson system 31, the metel stem go passed the hole?? so the smoke travels around it and then up the stem? if im right, then yes, this is different.
I can see the metel stops befor the hole (which is center of the bowl)
The first few smokes, i had to run a cleaner thorugh it. This is my first straight pipe too so i found it very easy with the army mount too!

the bowl is smaller then my Rock of Cashel '999... and the P-lip is growing on me.

all in all...
a gr8 little pipe for a gr8 little smoke!

now.. what to get next month! lol

:edit :

Just to update, i been thinking about making the new pipe my 'aromatic' pipe, due to the system and the help it will give me on the moistur...
Saying this, as im still new and learning, the first one i would like to t try (dur to reviews and comments) is peterson's connoisseurs choice.

That would make the first and only 3 tins iv bought (ex cluding the little samples iv tried)
Dunhill : MM 965
Dunhill : EMP
Peterson : Connoisseurs choice   (still to purchese, will be first aromatic)

As the wife, 'dosnt mind' the nicer sweet smoke iv had from the little samples... i would probly smoke the aromatic in the evenings, and the english's during the day... would his be a normal things to do?? i dont know if most pipe smokers just stick to aro's/english, day in day out.. or if its normal to change during the time of day?

Cheers!
