What did you smoke today? How would you describe the flavor, room note, etc...

If you liked it: Why?

If not: Why not?

Hey Tim, I just moved this topic down to the Tobacco Forum just to keep things organized.

Hi Jason,

I noticed that and appreciate it! Thanks for the help, I'm still learning my way around here.

This is perfect, as I'm smoking a new-to-me blend that I'm enjoying, but doesn't really merit a full-topic review.

Hearth & Home Classic Burley Kake. It's either a very aromatic classic-style burley, or an aromatic with a strong burley basis. Either way, it's very nice. The copy says it's dark and white burleys, some red VA, flavored with cocoa, anise, and rum. On my palate, I definitely get the blended burleys, anise, and rum... less so the VA and cocoa, though there's definitely something else to it. Sort of an intersection of PA, ERR, and Uhle's Crushed White. Like most classic-style burleys, much less topping note after half a bowl. Very room-note friendly. Certainly nice for the price--maybe not *my* all-day smoke, but I can see it fitting someone's bill for that.

Been smoking John Middleton Walnut today, in fact I am loading up another bowl in a Kaywoodie Shellcraft bent billiard right now. Been smoking it most every day for the past 7-8 years.

Doc... glad you like the idea. What you said is exactly what I had in mind for this thread. I've seen this concept work great on some other (non-pipe related) forums that I frequent. I hope everyone jumps ( :bounce: ) on board with the idea and contributes... threads like this tend to become a daily obsession for me to review!

The description you gave of your current smoke is perfect. Makes me want to try some.

Howdy, pipers, Trout Bum here. Well, this afternoon I enjoyed a bowl of Robert McConnell's Scottish Cake. Scottish Cake is a virginia/perique blend that I have been really enjoying of late. This blend is medium bodied, medium strength in the nicotine department -- a great all day smoke. The room note is surprisingly agreeable -- more so than other vapers that I smoke. The perique plays more than just a bit part in this one; not quite as pronounced as it is in Escudo, but it certainly takes a well balanced role in delivering a quality vaper experience. This mixture is just right, subtly sweet and sweetly subtle, with spicy piquant notes from the perique weaving in and out of the brighter notes from the virginias, creating a sweet/spicy/toasted almonds flavor that isn't too sharp, nor boring or pedestrian. Scottish Cake, in a word, rocks.

Catch you fellers in the zone,

TB

This morning started early with some Butternut Burley, from Scotty at Pipes and Cigars. It's an aromatic smoke with a nice sweetness that is not cloying and leaves a nice room note. There's a fair amount of black cavendish in the blend, which probably gives it its' sweetness and aroma. Recommended for fans of good aros.

Now I'm smoking some C&D Plantation Evening, a blend with aged VAs, Latakia, Perique, and a little Turkish. It's got a great medium English flavor and the room note is not too strong for a blend with Latakia. It's my current favorite smoke and has always been in my top five overall.

Tim, hit me up with a PM if you really want to try some... I ordered plenty.

I smoked a bowl of my very first non-Aromatic. It is called HMS Victory. A mild English with Latakia. I found it to be very smooth and relaxing. Like a nice cup of hot tea.

Just cracked a tin and tried Escudo Navy Deluxe for the first time.

Holy crap that is good.

I can't seem to get enough of Orlik's "Golden Sliced" and today was no different. I smoked through 7 bowls of it in my old Stanwells. If you like VA/Burley flakes you should give this budget blend a try! I'll need to write up a full review.

Hey D_P_G... would love to read a full review... sounds like it has some potential...

So you liked it then?

Frost: You have my interest piqued... would you mind taking a crack at elaborating on that?... you know the drill: "A rich, smooth smoke from start to finish... flavors of ___ and ___ intertwining so delightfully that I forgot to pick my kid up from daycare... was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what new joys each successive puff would bring to my consciousness... I laughed, I cried, I rejoiced."

Ugh...I will try, however it should be noted that I am a relative newbie and lack a sufficiently refined palate and do not have the familiarity with the subtle nuances of tobacco flavors to do it justice.

The biggest thing I noticed about it was that the flavor came effortlessly compared to alot of other smokes. I just smoked at whatever pace I felt like and it did not seem to have any adverse effects on taste or flavor.

It has a sweetness, but not really sugary. Also a smokiness and tanginess and a really slight spicyness, but the smokiness is not woodsey, the tanginess is not really citrusy and the spicyness is not peppery, if that makes any sense. Like chewing on salted leather soaked in some sorty of flavored brandy maybe, although that doesn't really sound apetizing.

The smoke wasn't overly thick or creamy, but there was enough of it. Wasn't bad when inhaled, but a bit airy and didn't make much difference as far as taste.

It comes in nice neat coins/discs and has a delicious smell in the tin, but not like apple pie or chocolate or creme brule' or whatever...it is a tobacco smell. I just took two discs from the freshly cracked tin (no drying time), folded them in half and stuck them vertically, side by side in my boswell freehand. Then gently mashed down the ends sticking out of the bowl untill it was all in, tighter on the top and looser towards the bottom.

I smoked a bowl and a half last night, then finished up the other half of the 2nd bowl this morning. I tried reading a book with the first pipe but kept getting distracted by the tobacco flavors. It did seem to lose a bit of flavor with the DGT overnight, but still tasted good. Just not as full of flavor.

Does that help?

I've been diving into Peretti's flakes and they're all great. I'm especially enamored with Scottish Flake; "Our fullest bodied flake. A blend of mature virginias are cured with red wine, pressed in a cake, and steam treated". But Summerset Slice, London and Cambridge are also wonderful. Nice, thick cut flakes that burn slow.

A bit pricey, but for what little a bowl of good tobacco cost's, still a deal.

Natch
