A sad day in the Goldberg household

Any kid who can wear a Yankees hat in Philly is too tough to be blown up for long. Cute lil guys (human and feline) you got there. Tremendous bomb, gents!

    Why I don't smoke a pipe

Tongue bite from tobacco is alkaline; tongue bite from wine is acidic. Try both together, perhaps? (Coffee works, too, as Yak notes above.)

    Yak's new kitty!!

Awww, welcome, Oreo! Rescues are the best kitties, especially the runts. (Two of our three are runts.)

    RIP Hal David

    One of the all-time great songwriters, especially as half of Bacharach and David. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4WZjqdPVaI0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    Content lock is fun!

I'm sorry for your runin with bureaucrats, but I must say "Banned in England!" has a certain ring to it as a slogan for this place. I mean, the UK has daily newspapers with topless women, not to mention a prince running around coked up with his tadger hanging out. So getting banned there is...

    Edinburgh fringe one liners

    8) This is my kind of humour... a/k/a the kind of humour that makes my wife roll her eyes at me again.

    College

Welcome to higher ed--you'll do just fine, I trust. As someone who has taught the equivalent of your Comp course, I have to say my armed forces veteran students were some of my favorites. They are uniquely suited to understanding that good writing is like proper military duty: finding a wise...

    Newbie Question

The aromatic Gawith Hoggarth twists don't pack quite the wallop as some of their cousins, but still, tread lightly. As for pipe styles for your roleplay era, it was the heyday of the long clay pipe. Of the common shapes, I like the cutty best. If you don't like the length, snap off the stem to...

    The Traveling Pipester

By car, I'll take two in my hardside case--usually one briar and one cob with a Walker "forever" stem, along with a pipe tool and a bag of cleaners. Depending on length and destination of voyage, I bring some quantity of kitchen matches and pipe cleaners. One or two tins of tobacco... trip are...

I have a two-egg zulu that is a charmer with virginia tobacco. Tobacco/Cigar Event This Saturday in Windsor Conn >>>>

Sounds like a great time, Dock. Not too far from me, either. Family responsibilities kept me from it--such is life--but I'm keeping my eyes out for the next one of these so I can plan accordingly.

    Regarding BoB and other forums.

What PB said. In my experience, nobody's had much luck founding boards on the principle of "Just like [BOARD X], only better." And that goes for all themed-interest boards, not just the world o'pipes. The ones that thrive have a definite mission in either topic or moderation style. There's room...

    Female pipe smokers

Keep clicking back; there are some gems, including a great pic of the inimitable Hon. Millicent Fenwick (R-NJ) lighting up at her committee podium in Congress. http://pipelovinladies.tumblr.com/post/27126587308/congresswoman-millicent-fenwick-lighting-up-in-the

    Pipe smoking effects on health

Never in the real headlines, but it does remind me of this: http://famouspoetsandpoems.com/poets/john_betjeman/poems/813 (Not to be taken as epidemiological evidence. Just a nice poem.)

I just tried McClelland Navy Cavendish (from 2001)

Kyle very kindly sent a big ol' sample of this to me, and it is delightful. It is a well-rounded, tasty blend that doesn't take long to jump into The Zone. I must say, I prefer it in a cob--and why not, indeed, for a Navy blend. Put it in a nice bent MM with a Walker Forever stem, and it was...

Which tins keep the WORST seal?

The worst in theory are the "treasure chest" (hinged) tins... they're just for looks, and inside is usually a foil pouch. Solani Silver Flake, some of the WØ Larsens, etc. Have the Mason jar waiting at home--don't chance it. In practice, though, I'm in accord with the Hive Mind here: square...

I feel like an idiot, but I need help keeping my pipe lit...

I second that heartily! I have paper-pad desk blotter--I can take notes and sort tobacco all in the same place. When there's too many coffee rings, doodles, and tobacco oils on the topsheet, I just tear it off and start afresh.

Love 'em! Were they found in a book, or found in your imagination? Fine stuff, either way!
