I had the chance to try Edward's Bishop Burley and like it. Great smoke in my opinion. So, now I'm interested in trying some other burleys. I'm considering Hearth & Home Classic Burley Kake, McClelland Bulk #110 Just Plain Nut and McClelland Bulk X40 - Burley By The Slice. Has anyone tried these and if so what's your take on them? Is there something else you would recommend?

+1 on Wessex Burley Slice and H&H Classic Burley Kake. But would also recommend Solani Aged Burley Flake.

Hey Dave...I was gifted some Peter Stokkebye(sp?) Cube Cut which is a burley...it was excellent...

I have some Classic Burley Kake coming to me so I can let you know what I think. According to tobaccoreviews it's got something aromatic going for it, though I'm not sure how strong.

Good ol' Prince Albert is a nice burley any day of the week.

I too like Solani Aged Burley Flake and HH Classic Burley Kake, and they are two ends of the spectrum: the former a rich blended tobacco-forward burley and the latter very aromatic.

The burley blends from Uhle's in Wisconsin are delicious but require a direct order in some quantity.

I have really tried to like other more premium burleys but I just keep coming back to Prince Albert and Carter Hall.

THX FOR STARTING THIS TOPIC. I have for the last two months spent hundreds of $$ trying out new and different types of baccy. I have some Stonehaven ,FVF, penzance, balkan sobranie, dunhill nightcap , rattray's to name a few. However i think i am more of a burley smoker. I enjoy smoking boswell's premium. Had i not spent so much dough on those mentioned baccy's i would be now sampling some burleys as mentioned above. So while i eat 'ramen noodles' for the next 2 months or so i 'll be taking notes on some burleys to get.

Try Scottish Moor from Edwards, I like it better that Bishop Burley. There's another one that's not too bad (I think it's called Colonial, but I'm not sure).

Give Cumberland and Robusto a try (I'm not sure if Robusto is a burley, but I smoke it as if it were). Lately I've been smoking my free sample of Angler's Dream and I'm liking it a lot: it reminds me of Carter Hall and Prince Albert, only tastier and better in every other aspect.

I've tried a bunch and consider myself a burleyholic of the worst order. I'd rate my top 5 as:

Uhle's blend 00
Uhle's Perfection Plug
Wessex Burley Slices
Peretti's Thanksgiving Day
GL Pease Barbary Coast

The only one on your list that I've tried is Classic Burley Kake. It's a wonderful blend, but it's also an aromatic. It's an unusual aromatic, I admit -- it doesn't have the goopy/nasty chemical characteristics that many aros have, I assume because Russ uses no humectants and all-natural ingredients. But the flavorings are kind of hard to miss -- the anise and chocolate come through loud and clear, as does the small proportion of virginia leaf.

I would highly recommend Cornell and Diehl, as burlies are pretty much their bread and butter. Old Joe Krantz, Haunted Bookshop, Morley's Best, Epiphany, Old Hollywood, and Walter Franklin are all top-notch burley mixtures.

+1 on Solani Aged Burley Flake - very nice, but pricey! ($16/tin here...)
I smoke a lot of Boswell's "Premium Burley Blend". It is a great smoke and relatively inexensive (6 oz was less than $20 on the last go around). I keep a big glass jar of that blend handy.
I've been meaning to try some Prince Albert, but haven't found any locally yet.

I rode the burley wave long enough to find out that it's not for me. Compared to every other major tobacco class, it's tasteless.

Cumberland has been mentioned, but the mahogany is dark fired Kentucky, which although it can be argued is a type of burley, IMHO tastes nothing like it. The particular bales(s) of the mahogany that GLP bought in conjunction with C&D tastes far different than any burley I've tasted. Cumberland is one of my favorite blends. I have five lbs that is six years old; it really transforms and integrates and is delicious!

For the present, my go-to is P&W Nut Brown Burley. Plenty of complexity, toffee flavors, cool smoking, what's not to like?

In fact I need to get some more of this in....

Cheers,

RR

Puff,
I can see our favorites are almost identical, I love burley's also and I would add McClelland X-40 to the list which is fantastic, albeit quite heavily cased with what I believe to be fig. Other than that, any of L J Peretti Burleys are on the top of my list.

I have a sample of Hurley Burley that was sent to me by Doverpiipe. I'd be glad to pass it to any brother who might like to try it also. Just PM me.

I enjoyed this blend too! Great stuff!

In C&D I like Epiphany and Morley's Best the best. Boswell's Premium Burley is very good, as is Scotty's Butternut Burley from Pipes and Cigars. These last two have an aromatic component so if aros are not your thing you might want to avoid them. Personally I love them. Also from P&C in the Hearth and Home line, I like Old Tartan, which has some deer tongue. Peretti's has several great burley blends, Cuban Mixture and Burley Plug Cut being my pick of the litter.
