Smoking any single Dunhill pipe gives you no idea of how good or poor a Dunhill can be. There's no magic number you must try to be able to grasp what makes a Dunhill great. Just like any other brand, you will find poor smokers, fair smokers and exceptional smokers.
THIS.

Which the riff about marrying your wife's sister assumed people "got."

Even with the same bloodline, the differences between individuals are striking.

Figuring you've got a handle on DunhillS from one example is naive, although the one you end up with might well be representative of what they put out.

Then again, that depends a lot on the time period . . .

True. I've seen and even smoked many more Dunhill pipes than I own and guess what? Some pipes made in the 1960's and even patent pieces aren't that nice! And some pipes made in the 80's, 90's and beyond are wonderful!

Guess its a case of who made them and whether or not it was made on a Monday or a Friday! :p

The only thing I know for sure is that I know nothing lol

Be it Dunhill or Peterson or Bang or Brebbia... It comes down to good wood. Sometimes it's a hit, and sometimes it's a miss

Hey, if I alluded to being "anti-Dunhill" or a non-believer, I'm not. I just won't (meaning can't) be easily able to find out for myself. I'm neutral leaning skeptical. The entry fee is pretty high for being in that particular club, so ignorantly blissful until otherwise noted.

All I can say is "DITTO"

I'm amazed this thread has survived this long without being moved to the rubber room.

Also, like my Dunhill.

Who can reccomend a billiard from someone else that will smoke like a Dunhill. Preferably a small shop on the board.

Thanks,
You can try a MM Legend corn cob which you can order directly from the manufacturer.

Genius. 8)

Haha. Succinctly put. I painted a little white dot on some of my Legends' stems. Private jests aside, I'm not anti-Dunhill at all, because, although premium priced, the premium is not so high that the buyer's family is in danger of missing meals. Could be, though, that if I decided it was time to pick up a premium piece of briar, I might opt for a premium brand lesss explicitly marketed on "snob appeal." I don't know, Ser Jacopo, maybe. But I'm more in the value buyer camp, so I tend to admire Audis and then buy the Honda.

I told you, brother, just come to my place and we'll have some drinks and you can smoke the hell out of these Dunhills!

You're a generous man...however:

Cost of a used Dunhill: $200 - $300
Cost of a new Dunhill: $400+
Cost of going to San Diego to smoke one of Shane's: $500 in travel

Let's just hang out when I finally get back down there again. :lol!:

Dunhill 1976 Root Briar #421095SW
This is a Grp. 3 size with very nice cross grain.  Except for that
slight wear on the rim, due to a poorly controlled lighter, I
imagine, the condition is excellent.  Of course the draw is open.
5.15" long, bowl 1.8" tall.  Weight: 7/8 oz., 24 grams. $135.

1975 Group 4 Dunhill Root #12186541CG
For a simple Root Briar, this pipe has good cross grain, with the
Bird's Eye on the front and back of the bowl, and the cross
grain on the side, which is opposite of what you mostly see. The
condition is excellent and the draw is wide open.  With a slight
tweak of the pipe cleaner tip, it goes through to the bottom.
4.5" long, bowl 1.8" high.  Weight:  1.5 oz., 41 grams. $175

1986 Grp. 3 Dunhill #531014
To me, this is just a run-of-the-mill pipe.  I'm not saying it's not
distinguished, I'm simply saying that whatever makes it
distinguished has eluded my scrutiny.  It does have the
capacity to take a 6mm filter and it is in excellent condition.
That, of course sounds good, unless you want to consider that
it might mean the original owner didn't like the pipe.  OK...now
I'm piling it on unnecessarily.  After all, it has not been smoked
enough to draw a real conclusion regarding its smoking
properties.  Nonetheless, I will put an appealing price on it.
5.2" long, bowl 1.75" tall.  Weight: 1 1/8 oz., 31 grams. $115.

Good, then it's still cheaper to just buy one than makin' a special trip to Shane's. Although, now I kind of want to go hang out with Shane. I think we'd have a blast.

I have a straight billiard from the 1986 Dunhill lot that I bought new. The aluminum stem band seems unique to that year. It's a terrific smoker in spite of being a filter pipe. I always perk up when I see one of those models because it was the second Dunnie I ever got. It's packed away at this point, but it'll come out again definitely.

I have a 86' Cumberland Liverpool with the smooth dome rim... Awesome pipe! 8)

And people say anything made after the 70s is crap...

Dave! How's that Dunnie treating you? What has been the best blend (or two) that you've found for that pipe?

And I forgive you but I haven't seen any pictures of it yet!
