I think Escudo was better without the topping, but it remains, in the style of vivid VA/periques, one of the best. I was already thinking of the cigars I would buy with the money I'd make from divesting myself of my portion of the company, 59 tins, but I've decided to hold off:).

I opened a tin of Dunhill DeLuxe Navy Rolls and smelled it side by side with the tin of Escudo I'd been smoking. The Navy Rolls smelled like Escudo used to smell, a pungent, full VA/Perique. Then I smelled the Escudo, and then back and forth. I'd say that the N. Rolls are not topped.
I'm going to be smoking a few bowls of the N. Rolls to verify, but taste quite usually follows smell.

If I don't post again you can assume that I feel the N. Rolls are not topped.

They were also sliced about twice as thick as the Escudo and were moist enough such that I felt the need to dry them down, both of which make me feel they are blended and/or produced differently.
Well, here's the ingredient list for Dunhilll NR from the British American Tobacco website as of 8/1/2011:

4.3% sugar, 0.37% plum juice concentrate (kind of explains the raisiny aroma),  0.23% licorice extract, 0.16% "flavouring,"

Hello! This is my first post, and I cross my fingers!

Concerning the date code on Escudo tins, here's what you could read on another forum (that went through some difficulties some months ago). The guy asked the company and got the answer straight from the horse's mouth.

"Dear Mr. ****,
Thank you for your mail concerning the date code. The code is as follows. yyhhmmmmdd. Year, hour, month, minute, day.

Example: 1110082010 is 2011, 10 am, August, 20 minutes past, 10th. day of August.

I hope you are enjoying Escudo.

Please contact me, if you have any questions.

Med venlig hilsen / Best regards"

Cheers!
