Thurston has a dark dye, and that "pre-carbonated" bowl. I've not had any problems with pre-carbed bowls before, but so far, taste isn't as much as a concern as this packing/tamping revelation. If I get into a grove and discover I have more work to do, well, off to the races with sandpaper, everclear, cotton balls and time. Thanks for the tips!

Wow, I just read this whole thread while I ate my lunch...I'm not sure why, but I did.

Kyle, just to answer a question that I don't think has been answered yet, you asked whether the 999 was a traditional mortise and tenon: my 80s is mortise and tenon, with little to no gap and passes a pipe cleaner with no trouble, so it would seem to be pipe specific. I have several other Petes: 105, 150, B11, and "0" (317)- all with the exception of the 317 are traditional mortise and tenon.

ETA, my B11 is a Shannon and wasn't dip stained, but it was pre-carboned and it broke in the same as any other pipe. Three bowls of Prince Albert and was among my favorite smokers.

That helps answer my question, Dave. My quest is to get more Pete bent bulldogs, preferably with a traditional mortise/tenon setup. Yes, I know I'm doing okay with my first Pete, and fortunately well enough I can safely buy one and know I won't hate it, but I think I still (for now) would like to try and find a "chamberless" one or two. 999s were in particular interest because most of the 80S designs I've seen in person are pretty dinky. The one discussed here is particularly large, and yet isn't the "Captain" XL80. *shrug*

FWIW, my 80s is larger than my 150, but I had the opportunity to take a look at one of Les's 999s and it was pretty equivalent in size to the 80s. I don't know who much they vary in size across the various lines, though.

I have 8 Peterson's, 2 Pre-Republic bought by my father back in London in 1946, a Premier sandblasted 150s, the other a Deluxe System 3s. I have 3 80s that I have bought, mostly back in the 70s, an Emerald, a Kildare and a blasted Donegal ALL with a Saddle bit as the lower case s on the model number used to designate ( still does in the BIG catalog they have on-line) though this seems to be somewhat of a variable these days! I have 2 999's one. a blasted Donegal, the other a smooth Rosslare. I have another Donegal, again early variation when they were a blasted finish in the 150s shape again. In the "Big" catalog I reference : http://www.peterson.ie/pipes/CatalogueCOMP.pdf , they still designate an 80 as a bent bulldog w/tapered bit and the 80s with the saddle bit, same with the 150-tapered bit, 150s-saddle bit but I see that this seperation is not really folowed by retailers or even the factory these days :p As for size, ALL of my 999's, 150s, and 80s are all what one could call a grp.3/4 in size and as far as quantity of 'bac each holds. As for smoking, they all are basically the same for me - GREAT with the Pre-Republics being what I would call a bit "sweeter/smoother" but then they are much older briar. And I have NEVER had a problem with stain inside the bowls or missdrilling etc.though I do understand the factory was having some problems with that a few years ago. Thats basically my experience with Petes for whatever it's worth

FWIW my Kinsale XL21 I just started breaking in has a pre carbonized bowl. Now smoking my third bowl with C&D BF #1 and it's performing really fine.

No blistering (so far) and think it's going to be one of my favorite smokers.

Okay, I'm going to return to this for a moment, for some continuity, with GOOD news...

Thurston, the Pete 80S in question, in all (her?) beauty. I did a few things.

* I let it sit for a while. Not to dry, but to just...walk away. Sometimes one has to walk away from a project for a moment to get perspective via something else. It's been a couple of months.

* I changed my smoking style. One thing I discovered is that even if I smoke slowly, I am still drawing a little to long on this particular pipe--it's generating too much heat. This was something I did subconsciously, not purposefully, and managed to key in on. I observed this pipe was "on the verge of going out" and many times--did. This presented me with a unique perspective when I re-lit: good performance. Some pipes are more forgiving of a varying speed of smoking (via conversing, being too nervous for whatever reason, socializing, being rushed) but Thurston? Think of an automatic vehicle, in gear, but foot off the gas...slow rolling forward. 5MPH rather than the normal 10 - 15. Stupid vehicle analogies. Maybe my time away readjusted my approach. Who knows. Pipes are different, and in many snapshot instances, so am I.

* I got rid of the Softy Bit. I like these additions on large pipes, they really help keep the stupid thing in my jaw, but on an 80S? I think I was more worried about "protecting" the stem, which is silly--I admit. I don't put Softy Bits on everything, and even less now. Maybe it caused me to clench/hold the pipe differently, and less moisture was traveling into the stem without the Softy. I prefer to keep the button above the "spit line" in the mouth--gross, but it's the best way to describe it.

* I realize certain tobacco cuts do better in this pipe. Union Square has been utterly, wonderfully delicious in this pipe. It's been dry, and the briar is sweet and delicious. Thicker flake cuts or chunky stuff does great in my Ben Wade, Kirk Bosi, Jirsa Blowfish...all with different bowl configurations--but not Thurston. Flat, ribbon-like, and wider cuts (ala Pease Virginia stuff) packed just-so, just works.

SO. I'm getting it.

I am enjoying the hell out of my first Pete, and I'm really glad.

Example : I've been proceeding on the assumption that every pipe that sings with FVF must be equally happy with Union Square.

Ain't so.

Uh oh.

"Thurstina?" :pale:

This pipe loves Union Square. In fact, it's been the best I've ever had Union Square. Embarcadero, even when I was smoking it exclusively in the pipe, was good, but it didn't go "magic" on me. So, I have an Embarcadero pipe. Now I have a Union Square pipe.

Ain't that cool? I've gotten to a point where the tobacco trying is great, however, there's a "Stage 2" I've been attracted by, which is matching up the guns with the ammo. So far, nothing has exploded, so I suppose I'm okay. A few bulls-eyes has been very encouraging.

Yep.

That's where it goes from Pretty Good to REALLY Good.

Synergy !
