Well, I finally tried the JKP.

I love it.

Very mellow and smooth. Also, oddly enough, the ability to prepare the tobacco is actually quite a fun thing. I did a thin slice and full rub for the first bowl. Thinking of trying cubes next.

Very cool.

Greg, if you're still lurking...

Given the cartoon, perhaps you should alter your byline to:

"Minister of Silly Walks, and Originator of the JackKnife Crawl" lol
Well, that would just be silly, wouldn't it?

Did you do the cartoon? I'd love to put it on my page, but I have to be careful with copyright issues.

Unfortunately, no...it's not mine to give you. The cartoonists name is Jerry King...I found the cartoon on a cigar website and 'adjusted' it (my bad). I had to google his last name, to find his first name. You'd be surprised at how many cartoonists there are with the last name 'King'! I could easily do a cartoon based on the one in question (lots of experience there in my past) but I would think that constitutes plagerism, or some such activity that might lead to a litigeous end...although I'm pretty sure I've seen this theme again and again over the years. Maybe the basic theme could be maintained but the scene moved out of the desert, etc. Well, I'll play with that and if I come up with something, I'll pm you. It would be a nice break for me - away from the sculpture and wood carving & back into the graphics end of things.

The intellectual property side of this is really pretty vague. I did a google search and found hundreds, if not thousands, of various cartoons using this theme.

As far as copyright, it applies less to the scene concept and more to the actual drawing and phrasing of the original fellow's work. If you do a different drawing, your take on the theme of the desert guy, then imho it would be extremely unlikely that any real liability would attach. Think of it this way, if such a general theme could be copyrighted, almost nothing could be produced. The brilliance of your alteration isn't the desert itself, but rather that someone would give up safety to find JKP.

For example, take a shipwreck survivor. You could use the exact same wording you came up with and make it a fellow rafting by an island with two guys on it.

Or an Igloo with two eskimos.

Or a fellow running past two firemen into the burning building to get his JKP.

Point is, it's your joke that's funny and I really would love to see one up on Greg's site. :D

Oh dear! So, how many 'billable hours' do I owe you for?

Maybe we can be cell mates at Sing Sing if you're wrong!

I DO like your list of scenarios pertaining to similar cartoons - you've hit most of the common nails on the head I think. I guess I will work on a new drawing to go with the JKP.

Greg should announce a 'cartoon contest' and have the very thing you've described be a guide...deserts, eskimos, burning buildings, adrift on rafts, etc., etc., etc. So much good material.

I'll give you the friends and family discount; $250 instead of $300.

(On a more serious note, merely because the ABA and a few judges would kill me if I didn't state the extremely obvious [ridiculous, I know], the legal stuff was only a friendly opinion not counsel since I'm not licensed yet.)

A cartoon contest would be awesome.

PS. I've heard Sing Sing is lovely this time of year.

CLRV -

You seem to be a man of taste and talent...a man of insight with a keen mind for analysis. A player, engaged and eager to have fun. Obviously an excellent representative of this excellent site.

And thanks, by the way, for the discount...my check is in the mail.

PS: I appreciate your first hand knowledge of Sing Sing

BTW: Good job with your avatar pic. Taking those numbers off the bottom of the state photos can be tricky! lol
