*shrug*

I've had a weird day. I'd kick my own ass, but I'm too tired.
+1 for idiocracy

Ok, Kyle, your plane is fueled and ready...

Sorry, man. I couldn't resist. That's what you get for messin' with the Commander.

You kiddin' me? You can't take it back, now--you know I'd fly it! I'm man enough.

I wondered how long it would take you guys to come up with some escort craft to play 'go along'. I'm thinkin' that the P40 Warhawk (being one of the three or four most recognizable fighters of WWII) would be an excellent escort.

So let's have a little contest here. Members only. There are three planes in the running for "Official Escort" status of the BoB Bombers Squadron. In order of their appearance below (not counting the Corsair) they are the P40 Warhawk, the P51 Mustang and the dark horse...the P38 Lightning. Vote for your favorite and state a valid reason (not related to something silly or intended to taunt another pilot, etc.). The winner will be the one that gets the most votes by 6 a.m. this Monday morning. It will be recognized in the future as the official escort, yadda, yadda, yadda. AND...I will pick one pilot that voted for the winner, and in my sole opinion gave the "best" reason...and reward him with his choice of one tin of extraordinary tobacco (I'll suggest 4-5 options...like Escudo, Kendal Cream Flake, Bracken Flake, Best Brown, FVF, etc., etc., etc.) which I will ship to him to arrive prior to the mission date.

Who knows...this might be the start of a "Contest Series" for this mission!

Anyway...on to the 'possibles'.

PS: Anyone who asks a question about this is automatically disqualified...all the information you need is right here...just read it and do it.

The P40 Warhawk:

Of course, the other two most recognizable (IMHO) are the P51 Mustang and the gull winged F4U Corsair.

Man...I just couldn't resist this shot!!! Doesn't "Sparky" have ANY pride?

So...just because I like it so much, even though it's generally a Navy plane and a carrier based flyer...it's just so cool! But anyway...I'm throwing it out of the running. No Navy need apply. That kind of thing.

So what do I replace the Corsair with? Boy, In my book it's gotta be the plane that shot down Yamamoto...nice record. In the Eureopean theater it would be akin to taking out Hitler!

So here we have the number three entry...the P38 Lightning...twin tail...twin engine...looks a little unusual, but it's HOT!

I just hope they keep having the Air Races here in Reno after that awful crash last time. :| I loved hearing the planes warming up.

Why must limit this to only 3 aircraft? (Asked purely to disqualify myself)

The Warhawk is the best though. There isn't any explanation needed for it other than to show a picture or an actual aircraft. I mean it is the epitome of badassness. The other, while still being awesome, just don't have that "make the enemy piss their pants" appeal to them that the warhawk does. I means seriously there are darn tons of warhawk video games so generations to come can recognize the aircraft...although marginally altered for the games. The token teeth on the front just scream "I will mess you up!"

Competition...I think not.

Alright Commander, I'll help start this off.

The P-51 Mustang.

Why?

The P-51 Mustang is the plane that went all the way. As Allied armies fought their way deep into occupied Europe, it was the P-51 Mustang which wrested control of the skies from the Luftwaffe. More than just a ferocious dogfighter, the P-51 Mustang was one of the fastest piston-engined fighters and could fly higher and go further than any other single-engine combat aircraft of the war. The P-51 Mustang also claimed the most Allied kills - with at least 281 pilots earning the “Aces” (5 kills) Distinction in a Mustang. IMHO - it was the greatest fighter of the war.

Yep...the Mustang has the stats, but the Warhawk has the shark mouth so take that Rob.

SHARK MOUTH

Well, since the pink P-40 isn't in the running, I'm going to vote for the P-51. It's just a badass plane. Period. I think Sparky knows that too. He can paint it however he wants, because nobody's gonna mess with him. 8)

True - the Shark Mouth is way cool. But if you can't catch the tail of an Axis fighter, those teeth do you no good - nothing to chomp on. 8)

Ok, the P-40 looked cool, but was bordering on obsolete at the beginning of the war. Sorry, guys, them's the facts. It's a close race between the other two.
The P-38 Lightning was a great aircraft. The German's called it the "split-tailed devil". Counter-rotating props eliminated rolling torque, and the heavy armament on the center line increased it's accuracy. It was a bit too much of a technological stretch, though. They hadn't quite figured out the aerodynamics on the tailplane. Placed as it was, level with the wing and body, it would lose pitch control at high speeds. This made it dangerous in a steep dive. A skilled pilot could cut throttle and add flaps to pull out. The unskilled would meet the only 100% effective anti-aircraft system. (the ground) Also, fears of the enemy getting a hold of the new superchargers that gave it it's great engine performance led to them being removed from most planes flying over Europe. Pilots called this version the "Castrated Lighting".
The P-51 Mustang, on the other hand, was pure and simple American ingenuity. Nothing fancy; just take something we already know how to build and make the best version of it we can, then mass produce the hell out of it. Nothing personal against the other two, but my vote goes to the Mustang, the "Cadillac of the Sky".

And yes, BTW, that's Batman! :D

I'll go for the multi-purpose P-38, could do a little bit of nearly everything fairly well and kept going! (Of course, if it was open nomination, I would have said Spitfire, good Anglophile that I am) :D

A tip of the bowler to you and your Spitfire, good sir.

If this vote were based merely upon WW2 aircraft technological advancements, then the winner would've been the ME-262. Jet engine technology several years ahead of what the US and the British were working on.

I think we are all eliminated for suggesting other aircraft
