Is there anyone who has not received their orders re: our target for July?

At this point we are less than two weeks away from your likley mailing dat...er, I mean FLIGHT LAUNCH...date.

And lastly...XO in MO...Major Rob...can you give us a final count on the Fighter Escort vote?
And a list of those voting for that choice would be good as well, if possible.
Then I need to go back though and read the reasons in order to award the tin.

I haven't even found my plane. Hope it isn't a weather balloon like last time.

Still poking around in the ordnance bunker. But I'll get a load chosen, yet!!

I already know what I'm sending. Just changed my plan today after receiving a PM from one of the pilots divulging his choice...which was what I WAS going to send...but I think my second choice will be OK.

But the second choice is what I was gonna send. Fine, I'll take my third choice and fourth bwahahaha (although it may look marginally like crying that is my evil laugh)

You guys that are yappin' up bein' locked and loaded and ready to roll down the runway are makin' me real nervous. Just to reinterate...

The date for take-offs for this mission should be
on or close to...Wed., July 18th...RIGHT!

I spent 2 hours in a puddle jumper waiting to take off from St Louis. It was hot and I had to pee.

In other words:
Box loaded with address affixed ready to drop off at the Post Office. I've set a reminder on my calendar to bring it to my attention closer to the proper time.

Hurry up and wait - this is a military affair after all.

I still need to find a box for my bomb. Nothing the right size around here. I need something sturdy, to which I can afix the brackets to fit the bomb rack. Then there's the weight issue. To get it out to the plane I'm going to need a new truck...and some more crew. Well, it'll work out I'm sure.

Tick...tick...tick...tick...tick...

AND THE WINNER OF THE TIN MEDAL IS:

Rob...with a very (and almost only) well reasoned and convincing reason.

Plus the fact that he was the first to respond.

To recap...Rob wrote:

Alright Commander, I'll help start this off.

The P-51 Mustang.

Why?

The P-51 Mustang is the plane that went all the way. As Allied armies fought their way deep into occupied Europe, it was the P-51 Mustang which wrested control of the skies from the Luftwaffe. More than just a ferocious dogfighter, the P-51 Mustang was one of the fastest piston-engined fighters and could fly higher and go further than any other single-engine combat aircraft of the war. The P-51 Mustang also claimed the most Allied kills - with at least 281 pilots earning the “Aces” (5 kills) Distinction in a Mustang. IMHO - it was the greatest fighter of the war.

Now, a word to the wise. NO ONE (except a few of the loosers) bothered to quote any actual performance data among the planes in contention. The winning reason was more historical in nature, which is fine as it's an outgrowth of performance. But we were voting on which of the planes you wanted to protect you...and here's the thing:

Quick Stat Basics:

Speed: P-51 & P-38: about 450 mph, P-40: 350 mph

Rate of Climb: P-38: 4,750 ft/min., P-51: 3,200 ft/min., P-40: 2,100 ft/min.

Range: P-51: 1,650 mi., P-38: 1,300 mi., P-40: 650 mi.

Armament:

P-51:
6, 50 cal w 1880 total rounds
Additional hardpoints for rockets and bombs, fewer than P-38

P-38:
4, 50cal w 2000 total rounds
1 20 mm cannon w 150 rounds
Numerous rocket and bomb hardpoints

P-40:
6, 50 cal w 1200 max total rounds

So...those of you that picked the P-40...fine for you. Speed, rate of climb, range, ammo...all were severely limited. I mean, just in terms of range...the Mustang could protect you for 1000 more air miles! Nuff said!

Contrats to Rob!

I just watched the "Top Ten Fighter Planes of Alltime" on the Military Channel. They picked the P-51 as number one as well. I guess we're a knowledgeable bunch!

My ordinance has been selected and awaits deployment.
