I was downtown walking about with my camera and pipe. I saw this old Native American sitting off the side of a park watching the people who were enjoying the day. He was smoking this big old drop down pipe which looked handmade. I was amazed at how shiny the pipe looked and he was just an old man enjoying it. I sat down and talked idle banter with him about the day and life.. I asked him how he got his pipe to look so shiny. He pulled the pipe out of his mouth and said " You may think I am crazy BUT... I take an old flannel piece of cloth and dig out some ear wax and rub it in good and then smoke it. After I am done smoking it I rub it off nice.. Okay was he pulling my leg ? Or should I be saving my Q tips ???

P.S. That is why I like the Brothers so much.. Yea..

I read a post somewhere a little while back about using "natural wax" as in facial oil to buff a pipe. The information on it says don't do it. It will smell like hell and for lack of a better term, will go rancid. The example that was given was imagine not washing your hair for a week. Notice how it smells? That's what the pipe will smell like! BLECCCCCCH!!!!!! :affraid:

I looked at Wiki and read about the chemical make of ear wax. I'll keep my Q-Tips FAR away from my pipes, Thank You Very Much!!!! (I think I'll go and puke now)...............

no no no,,the ear wax is for meerschaums,,,,helps color them,,,

Even though I prefer Briar Pipe Wipe and/or Paragon Wax, I don't see the big deal about the using your own nose-wax. If wax that came out the bum-ends of thousands of six-legged stinging insects doesn't bother me, I don't see why I should get freaked out by the outside of my own face.

(Then again, plenty of women and children are freaked out by the outside of my face, but I don't think that's because of the oil...)

I think it would be best to not try this out.. He may have been pulling my leg... Old men can do that off and on.. He had a good laugh afterward I bet.. Does sound nasty anyway.. :x
Onward to better topics..
Chuck..

Personally, I've tested out the facial oils thing, and honestly I didn't think it smelled bad. Of course, I would recommend making sure you don't do that after a heavy workout lol.

Things like this is why I'll never buy an used pipe.
Geez, now you got ME thinkin' about it....

I did the nose wax thing on some of my pipes from 20 years ago. I had read it in the Hacker book so I thought I'd give it a try. It works, and I've never had any foul smell associated with those pipes.

I don't do it anymore, however, as I think that it ends up plugging up the porosity (does that word exist??) of the briar, and possibly leads to a wetter smoke. Maybe that's just my imagination though...
