Well, I like Sutliff's Sunrise Smoke so I thought i'd give EMP a chance. I also picked up some London Mixture. Both of them were harsh, burned the back of my throat on exhale. London Mixture had a hard time staying lit also. Both didn't seem to offer much flavor at all..

Disappointed!

LM has always been one of my favorite English blends. Perhaps you should try drying it out a bit more next time if it was hard to keep lit. It offers plenty of flavor.

HTH

Cheers,

RR

I did try to dry it out. I tried it in both a filtered and unfiltered pipe. I smoked a different english blend and no issues.

I'll give it another try. I tried some in my BBB Canadian and also a Brigham.

Well then I got nothin'.

Perhaps some of other members can offer sage advice.

You mentioned "... burning the back of your throat when you exhale"  If you are INHALING an English blend with Lat and Or in it I can guarantee it won't be very pleasurable  That aside, some folks just are NOT English/Balkan folks and some blends aren't for them. :p

I don't inhale. But I have to blow the smoke out :). It's almost as if my throat closes when I exhale. I'll give it another shot.

Could over packing cause the pipe to go out frequently? I just purchased this pipe. I tried another English blend and same thing. Burn in the throat on exhale. I smoked about half the bowl and had to abandon ship. Now wondering if its me, the baccy or the pipe lol

i relight about ten times a bowl. don't worry about relights, happens a lot. it's not a cigar, doesn't have to stay lit all the time. also some latakia burns the inside of my mouth. mainly my lips, but my throat as well. penzance doesn't though? make sure to smoke slowly, and if it still burns, stick it in a mason jar for a few months and get back to it. you might just need to condition yourself to smoking a pipe. that is of course if you are new to smoking a pipe, if you aren't, you may not like latakia?

Typically, if you aren't getting any flavor you're smoking too hot, which could indeed be caused by packing your bowl too tight. Loosen up a bit and try puffing a bit more gently and slowly. I find London Mixture to be very flavorful, and it burns exceptionally well for me right from the tin, with a negligible number of relights. Fast becoming a favorite.

There is the possibility that you could be sensitive or allergic to either Latakia or one of the Orientals used in it as well. I seem to have a mild sensitivity to Kentucky, and occasionally experience some tightening of the throat while smoking blends particularly high in Kentucky content.

This is a way great observation.

Two of my favorites. In fact, London Mixture is my benchmark English. They are a bit higher nic content and strength than most their counterparts though.

Could very well be a sensitivity to Latakia. It is smoked over pine wood fire. I know at least two pipers that can't smoke it.

On a Dunhill note, I had a recent experience with a batch of bulk 965 that smoked rather harsh, and a tin of 965 that was very smooth. :?: :?:  Not saying there's any correlation, but it had me wondering about differences between their bulk and tinned baccys.

Back in the mid 70's we could get 965 in bulk also, blended bt Murray's of course and I tried some then and found the bulk version to be MUCH sharper or harsh as you describe it. I think it has to do with the tinning process which allows the various leaves to "marry" much differently than when in a 5 # polyethaline bag. Since there has never been a way to accurately date a tin of Dunhill's 'bacs as to when they were packaged, we never new if the tin we bought was just tinned or maybe a year or two old. My experience was more to my liking with the tinned versions and I think I may stay along this line when I buy the newer version of this 'bac.

Give London Mixture a chance.

It is a great English blend. And unlike Nightcap, I can actually smoke LM all day if I could.

That being said, you could have a sensitivity for latakia. I'm not a big English smoker, so it might not be up your alley.

My suggestion to you would be to sip it and try it in a few different pipes. I tend to smoke Englishes in my clay pipe or corncobs. I don't know why, I just do. But play around with it. If worse comes to worse you can probably find someone who loves English Mixture and gift it to them.

To add my addendum, I happen to dislike Early Morning Pipe. I find it off putting for some reason. YMMV.

I am smoking EMP right now it's delicious and I am sorry you did not like it. I also love LM what a tasty English. Anyhow the great thing about Dunhill tobacco is well for me straight out of the tin the moisture levels are perfect.

I have gone to buy my first tin of EMP, 2-3 times now, and i always get pointed to somthing different. i was pointed to 965 the first time, and like it very muchly.
how does EMP and LM compair to 965?
im still new, and not tried them, but opening 965 was lovly, just such a smoky and peaty smell, lovly!!

maybe i should just go in and buy a EMP tin, without making convasation! hehe

Go to the B&M, get a tin of 965, pay for it THEN start a conversation ! Take it home, open it, load your pipe, light it and sit back and enjoy another Dunhill Classic   All three are a typical ENGLISH/BALKAN mixtures with 965 being what I would call the fullest of the three. Not the same as each is unique. Buy some, smoke it and enjoy

If you can't find a likely culprit for low taste, it could be that your taster decided to take a hike when you smoked those bowls. Mine does; for instance last night mine was mostly off when I smoked ODF. This used to happen much more, and because of that I developed a palate cleansing ritual involving brushing my teeth followed by hydrogen peroxide/water gargling and sucking on cinnamon stick. When I resumed smoking last year I eliminated the hydrogen gargling, and I am getting much better results. I think I was overdoing it. Now I rarely feel that my taster is vacationing in the Bahamas!

I think the suggestion to smoke slowly is grand for a variety of reasons but that it is surely tied to taste. They say that the lowest possible combustion yields the best flavor.

IMO there's nothing wrong with the mixtures you smoked but possibly something is not the best with the smoker.

A little bit of pipe porn for you guys, i know you like a sexy pic now and again.
My new System 31, and my first tin (which i put in a jar) of EMP.
im thinking of keeping one jar for EMP, and 1 for 965, both my fav english blends thus far

They're both classics ! Next two in the Dunhill family you need to try are Royal Yacht and London Mixture
