Funny you should bring up Andrew Gold and "Lonely Boy" hobie. Over the last week I've listened to several of his performances of them on the tube, having not heard them for donkey's years.
Always liked that tune, still do. The segue from the end of the solo section seems to be a bit jarring and off course to me but it all comes back together after that. Love the theme and Andrew's vox. Totally underrated tune. Pity he didn't do more solo work before his untimely demise.
I'm also a fan on what he did with Ronstadt's stuff. I clearly remember that I once heard (or read) an account of his solo on "When Will I Be Loved". Apparently he was dissatisfied with the impact the melody had so he proceeded to track it another 8 or more times or something, which was then all mixed down to be the fat sounding version on the release.
Genius! Phil Spector wall of sound technique to the max!
