Dang! It won't all fit in the replacement box. Well, I will sample something else and think about it. Even taking all the freebee tins they gave us at Chicago doesn't make room.

Working on getting the box to the PO. Apparently this goes to Travis next. Conf # later. Here is my list.

Sampled:
Escudo
Peterson Sherlock Holmes
Dominican Glory
Accountant's Mixture
Robusto Royale
Winter Heartbeat
Bufflehead Common Teal
GLP Westminster

Takes:
Open tin of Accountant's Mixture
Low Country Cooper
SHPC Great Hiatus
Sutliff Blend #5

Puts:

Thanks for having me! 8)

Box is getting close (rubbing hands together!). FYI Happy, I will be on vacation the week of July 5th, so don't rush through it on my account. I'll be home on Saturday the 10th, so you can adjust your sampling and shipping accordingly. Mike

Oh, and by the way gentlemen. As of Monday, June 28, 2010. It is illegal to ship pipe tobaccos via the US Mail.

PACT Act takes effect and only cigars are exempted. No mention of pipe tobaccos, but you can bet that they fall under loose tobacco like RYO does. So even though it's aimed directly at cigarettes, we get caught in the mix.

I don't know about you guys, but from now on I am sending "hobby supplies". Collectable tins, etc.

If you want to discuss the PACT Act, start a new thread elsewhere. Just thought you guys should know.

BAB's is 15lb 8oz and on the way to Iowa.

Notes.

That Escudo tin is about gone. I took two coins and rubbed them out. It's been years since I smoked this. But it was very good in my Tonni Nielsen. I think it may be a good Virginia and VA/Pr smoker.

That Peterson's Sherlock Holmes sounds like and smells like an aromatic. I was thinking a lot like Momoyama to me. Maybe a bit of peachy scent missing, but fruity. Does not translate to the smoke. Tastes like a decent Virginia blend. Maybe a Virginia burley blend.

Very nice pass! If it's ok with Carlos I think I'll open one of the Quiet Nights for sampling.

Ill try to get the box out so that it gets to hunter the 10th exactly.

Anxiously awaiting the box's arrival, ill post as soon as it gets to ol' I-oh-way.

Cheers!

Finally finished up all of my samples from the box pass.

Here are the remaining notes:

SAMPLE NOTES #6

Bufflehead Shop Common Teal: A fairly full English mixture with a bit of sweetness and a dry, tea-like top note alongside heavy, incense-like undertones. The Latakia in this sample seems to have mellowed a bit with age, but the Oriental component does still possess a respectable measure of pungent spiciness. The finish is long and savory. I would not hesitate to sample this again. Reminiscent of the offertory at a traditional Greek Orthodox service.

Friedman & Pease Kismet (1999): Soft with a bit of sweetness and a fragrant, yet subdued Oriental spice. The Syrian Latakia is mellow with a very subtle winey note reminding of Honduran puros. Mild to medium bodied with a somewhat dry, woody finish. Seems to reveal itself most fully mid-bowl when smoked just a bit hot. Reminiscent of sitting around an outdoor fire pit on an unusually chilly summer night.

John Patton Robusto Royale: Way, way too much going on in this blend. A true ‘Hoover mixture’ if there ever was one. Mix up some different Virginias with some Burley, Turkish, Latakia, and Perique and then throw in some cigar leaf (and the kitchen sink?), and there you have it. Reminiscent of the silly soda pop ‘suicides’ young boys enjoy making at the 7-Eleven before they finally discover girls and turn their attention to more worthwhile adventures.

McClelland Oriental No. 1 (1998): This sample very much reminds me of a 100g. tin of Oriental No. 6 from the exact same year (1998) which I finished earlier this year: rounded and soft with a very subtle Latakia presence and fragrant, perfumey notes. Slightly sweet and very mild bodied, it has an airy and somewhat flat finish. Given the decidedly mild structure of this mixture in the first place, this is a blend probably best smoked young. Reminiscent of drinking weak Oolong tea.

The dog's favorite person to bark at just dropped off a big box from Chestnut, Illinois, and I have three days off work :D

Gonna grab a bottle of mountain dew (not a coffee person, though I've never tried any higher quality coffees, but anyway) and wake myself up, then open the ol' box.

Cheers!

Opened the box a couple hours ago... wow, this may take a while to take in. It's pretty amazing to see so many blends I'm curious about in one box.

Will hopefully have an update today or tomorrow.

I agree that there is no clear definition that I ahve been able to find, but my understanding of PACT is that it is only on cigarettes, RYO tobacco and smokeless including snuff. No limitations on pipe tobacco or cigars. None of the on-line merchants have posted anything about pipe tobacco and many are still showing priority mail as their method of shipping.

Besides, PACT is only for commercial shipments from someone with a tobacco license. Private shipments between individuals are still supposed to be OK.

Working my way through the box, looking at the samples and deciding on trades.

A question for Carlos, was the Nat Sherman sealed? If so, the seal must've broken on the way here. I was thinking about trading for it, but I wasn't sure if it was/wasn't a sealed tin.

Tried some Boswell's Berry Cobbler and Quiet Nights. Both are very nice.

Cheers!

Had a pipeful been taken out of it or was it full? I am positive I took that off the unopened shelf. But I do have an open tin around here someplace. How dry is it? I can always send something else in a follow-up box, so let me know.
