It arrived today, my Dunhill by Parker!!!!!!!!!!!!

As usual, the pipe is even better condition than what Nathan described.

I'm a happy chappie!!
Congrats on a beautiful Pipe, SpeedyPete!

Be sure and let us know how she smokes. 8)

Looks like a nice Parker! Enjoy ! Now you need to get a Dunhill

Dunhill ain't stupid. They can easily (and legally) claim they have no seconds by simply marketing no seconds directly under the Dunhill name. Savvy dudes, they are. Savvy indeed. Somehow people's idea they just chucked a never-ending supply of briar into an eternal bonfire of "no second best" is kind of amusing. They've done a great job at marketing, probably the kings in the pipe world (perhaps beyond...).

I've just now returned from our monthly pipeclub meeting where I've smoked the Parker for the first time.

Now, I can honestly and without any doubt say, I've never smoked a pipe like this before! Not a whisper of a gurgle, smooooooooth draw, it sits in my hand like it was born there. Thank goodness it prefers virginias (started off with Christmas Cheer 2011), the baccy just tastes so sweet and cool. I will have to get another (or 12) like this quickly, otherwise I'm going to kill this jewel.

That was exactly my thoughts tonight!!

But.......will/can a Dunhill smoke like this? Only way I will know is to buy one, right?

Unfortunately I'm saving my money for the BoB POY. I will therefor have to wait some more before I will know whether a "Dunnie" can be compared with this rejected piece of briar!! :D

Pete, you'll not go wrong with the BoB Tinsky. 'Nuff said. 8) You can wrestle with the forlorn voice of Dunhill calling your name later.

Well, maybe, just maybe, I've spoken to soon. I have to contradict myself.

I've just finished a bowl of BR Admiral's Flake in my small Brebbia Silver Rhodesian, also bought from Nathan Mattia. It might just have a little edge on the Parker. Same smooth draw, same sweetness out of the tobacco, much lighter than the Parker and sooooooo nice in my hand (like it was born there!). But there is a mysterious little "something else" in the Brebbia which makes it a bit more desirable.

I don't know whether the fact that both pipes came from Nathan has anything to do with it LOL.

I'm still not convinced that a "Dunnie" is a super pipe. I will have to buy one in future to make sure about this. In the meantime I will enjoy my GBD's, Brebbias, Savinelli's, Stanwells, Sasieni's, Petersons and my Parkers.

I may not be discerning but I find all of my pipes are doing a fine job. I do recall a GBD Billiard Century that was better than any pipe I had. Dropped it and broke the shank. I was so disgusted that I tossed it. Boy do I regret that now. :pale:

Not to be putting you up to anything, or to be raining on your parade, but a sample size of one is not much to generalise from :D

Would you have married your wife's sister ?

My wife had no sister

I know what you mean. That's why I say I will have to smoke a Dunhill before I can really make a judgement. Until then, I will remain sceptical about the matter but I will not judge.

My youngest favourite is the small Sasieni Old England which I've bought from Nathan recently. This is such a wonderful pipe, I won't trade it for any other pipe in the world, including ANY Dunhill. I ask myself the question, can a Dunhill smoke any better than this ? I don't think so.

Two things: 1) A few of my pipes are sometimes cranky, but the rest fall into the "highly satisfactory" category at any given time. The uncooperative briars usually have some evident trait that makes them so, or they just don't like some types of pipeweed, and 2) There's quite a bit of qualitative variation within the exact same pipe, depending on type of tobacco smoked, resting period, time since last thorough cleaning, inside or outside smoke, humidity, how hurried I am etcetc.

Variation seems to me to be inherently part of the game, and absolutes based on brand are not. That's how it looks to me.

Agree!

I have pipes which can be smoked joyfully for a week without serious cleaning. I also have others which I can only smoke for one day and then it start to complain. Some like a resting period of a couple of days while others are happy to just sit overnight. Some like VA's only, others thrive on latakia blends and still others don't mind what I feed them

I enjoy intimate relationships with all my pipes and therefore I know exactly how to treat them.

I love all my pipes and they're not even jealous about it!

I'll say it one more time:

Smoking any single Dunhill pipe gives you no idea of how good or poor a Dunhill can be. There's no magic number you must try to be able to grasp what makes a Dunhill great. Just like any other brand, you will find poor smokers, fair smokers and exceptional smokers. It's all about gettin' lucky :)

I've been lucky 8 out of 9 times! So to me Dunhill pipes are great.

(so are many other brands!)

:)

EXACTLY!!!

Just make sure you judge the entire brand based on that one pipe! Be it pisspoor or phenomenal lol :p

Just make the trip down here and you can smoke my Dunhills, Kyle! I've a few that might make you a believer!
