Not to kick the dead horse here, but I have an 01 (bent billiard) that is specifically not a system but has a little extra head room in the shank past the end of the tenon. From what I gather, this is what kyle has going on... it has the same effect of a system pipe, but is a lot easier to clean. just a tip i have learned, if you are trying to fit a cleaner through and dont want to pull the pipe apart so much, give the cleaner a kink about an inch from the business end and once it "bottom out" give it a twist with a little pressure to get it to pass into the airway. A few wiggles normally gets it for me. I use the "tamPete" method for a deep clean once everything has cooled down, but keep the wear and tear on the tenon down this way.

Monbla, if you decide to rage quit your peterson's because they cant get their product catalog in line, I will handle proper disposals of your petes.

And Kyle, SWEET find. I am itching for an 80s or a 999 since the full catalog was posted...

Yak: Awww, 0.10mm short of a System Pete? Shucks! 8)

Boxer: Understated and classy is exactly why I fell in love with it. I'm going to take better pictures when I get the right kind of light, as my normal "pipe light" that makes the grain pop out also washed out the dark brown/ebony stain that makes it such a looker. You think it's a painted black Pete until you get into standard room lighting, then you can see some of the lighter grain. Then you go out into the sun, and wowza, does everything stand out. Thanks for the pipe cleaner tips, I would have figured it out eventually.

Jefe: Thank you...as I mentioned, this is the only 80S that conformed to my desires for "the right Pete." The other 80S models I've held were all small. 999s were kind of another choice, along with the B5 and the XL15--just not too big, as I plan on traveling with the Petes and need 'em to stay on the average size. Who knows, maybe I'll just start collecting mutant 80S pipes and B5 Petes.

Shane: I ain't scared. 8)

Everyone: Here's some pondering from the logical side of things. Peterson pipes are made in a factory. Factories utilize machinery and process to make things faster, more consistent and attempt in any way to simplify in order to make their product. Since I assume they have a good reason, I'm thinking some of these certain "Non-System System" pipes are simply easier to work on the lines by throwing through the process. Obviously they have experience making good pipes, so they figure everyone's getting a good product and it's keeping their productivity up. Who knows, maybe there's a patent that is in place from another company that has a "System" set up such as this, ever so slightly different than the typical Peterson System, but Peterson can't label their particular product as such.

No matter what, it looks like a System pipe, and it smokes like a System pipe. It just doesn't say "System" on it or the packaging. Peterson nerds might have blood shooting out of their eyeballs over such nuances, but I'm still enjoying this damn pipe.

EXCELENT !!! And you will continue to enjoy it as thousands have theirs!! BTW that is one DAMN FINE LOOKING pipe !! And one of the shapes that they do so well!! It's no wonder you had it put aside for you! :p

Kyle

I can see why you love that Pete she is a beauty! I have a St. Pats day Rhodesian that I use for flakes and I think it is a great smoker. I love their balanced lines on the shaping. There is just something about them. May you have many hours enjoying yours.

Let's try this again since using 0 as a spacer in an attempt to get around the letter format confuses people

29.85 mm Mortise Depth
Minus
11.95 Tenon Length
equals
17.90 mm.

Excess headspace might be 3-4 mm. 18mm is a System Chamber.

Not even Peterson was ever THAT sloppy.

I would have to agree with you about that. I'm sure they weren't, but that model and others were NOT listed as System pipes so they ARE NOT. Peterson decides what they will call a System pipe, not us :p

Sweet Pete Kyle! I will have to be on the lookout for that particular model for my collection. Congrats!

So if your neighbor doesn't call himself a jerk, he isn't one. (?)

:face:
Whatever you want. You are obviously the EXPERT. :silent:

Get over it, guys. It's a Peterson! Whether they choose to call it a System or not, They designed it, They made it, and They can call it whatever they want. Kyle - you can call it whatever You want. I used to call my '99 Chevy Metro a death trap but it still drove just fine, and got 40-mpg city & 50-mpg Highway. Got 280,000 miles (mostly highway) outta that little 3-cyl. engine - regardless of what I called it.

Kyle, just smoke the damn thing. 8)

I had a proper redneck yardful of 92 - 93 Geo Metros (all 1.0L 3 cyls) , a fleet if you will. I rotated them as things broke, swapped parts, and probably got a good 200,000 miles out of all of them combined, and considering I paid about $300 a piece for them, I did okay! I see people spending so much money on a Prius and laugh at them. You don't need something like that to get 50MPG--but some people like to be complicated. I think it makes them feel special.

I'm honestly going to call this Pete (and additional pipes with this phenomenon) the "Unsystem." People can comb through the catalogs, history and specifics all they want, glasses at the end of their nose, furrowing their brows. I mean, what am I gonna do, give my new pipe back? It's drilled like a System. It's not a System. It smokes wonderfully, and I love it. Little will change any of that. 8)

Only Kyle could make a post that basically says, "Here's my new 80S", and have it turn into a rambling, 5-page debate! :p

Yeah. It's my doing. After a dozen posts of me saying, "Who cares? I love this pipe!" If I had that much control, I'd simply make them all give me $20.

Ok since everyone is debating what to call this thing and nobody has figured it out yet, I'm just gonna call it "Thurston". It looks like a Thurston to me. How's Thurston smokin for ya today Kyle?

:lol!: I can only now look at that pipe and think "Thurston Moore," the backbone of a favorite 80s alt/postpunk band of mine, Sonic Youth. Thurston it is.

With that, Thurston is taking a break today. I was having a real hankerin' for some Latakia (and I mean a HANKERIN'), so I had to pick another pipe.

So, have you gotten those terrible "ghosts" of #22 out of it yet and if so what are you smoking in it now? I do hate how those "ketchupy" McC blends "ghost" a pipe, don't you ? :p (as much as I have loved my beloved "Balkans", I'm really getting into Va's :p )

I think it was McC 24 I put through it at the shop... I can't recall, but I'm pretty sure it was 24. It didn't ghost up at all, or I would have found it in my Kendal Plug. So far I've been smoking a majority of the more aged McC Virginias (Dark Star, 2035) and the rest are SGs or GLPs. Not that I have anything against McC Virginias, ketchup or otherwise... Just too many tins open to the Nevada air.

The next tin I open will be the Scottish Flake s.ireland gifted me--and Thurston's gonna love it.

What's the record? Maybe we could break it with this one? :p Let's see, what could we add to this to keep it going? Maybe " does your Peterson "System" pipe smoke better with "ketchup 'bac or "old lady soap" 'bac ? :p This could be fun

Someone ought to "old lady soap" your mouth for even mentioning Lakelands even getting within a mile of Thurston, monbla.
